saipro Group to Construct India’s First-of-its-kind Iconic Sea Cruise Terminal at Mumbai Port.
Saipro Group is excited to announce the commencement of a groundbreaking project at Mumbai Port, which will significantly boost the city's capacity to handle international cruise traffic. The new cruise terminal, capable of accommodating 500 passengers at a time, is set to transform Mumbai into a major cruise hub.
Foundation Stone Laying CeremonyThe foundation stone for the new terminal was laid today by Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in a ceremony attended by several key dignitaries including Shri Jaykumar Raval, Minister of Tourism, Govt. of Maharashtra, Cabinet Minister Shri Raj Purohit, Member of Parliament Shri Arvind Sawant, and Member of Parliament Shri Anil Desai.
Project OverviewBuilt at an estimated cost of Rs 303 crore, the new terminal will replace the existing 40,000-square-feet facility, which currently handles around 55 ships and approximately 57,000 passengers during the peak season from November to March. The upgraded terminal will cover an expansive area of 4.5 lakh square feet, significantly enhancing its capacity and functionality.
Enhanced Capacity and Year-Round OperationSanjay Bhatia, Chairman of the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), highlighted that the new terminal will be capable of handling 200 ships and up to 7 lakh passengers annually. Unlike the current seasonal operations, the new terminal will remain operational throughout the year, positioning Mumbai as a premier destination for cruise tourism.
Vision for Mumbai PortIn line with the ambitious vision to transform Mumbai into a global cruise hub comparable to Miami, the new terminal will feature a variety of amenities. These include restaurants, retail spaces, separate lounges for arrivals and departures, and recreational areas for local citizens. Plans are also underway to develop a floating restaurant and marina, enhancing the overall appeal and functionality of the port.
Growth and Future ProspectsIn the 2016-17 season, Mumbai Port received 55 cruise ships carrying about 60,000 passengers. With the completion of the new terminal, Mumbai is expected to handle approximately 80% of India’s cruise passengers, catering to both international and domestic tourists. Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the government's ambitious target to increase cruise-liner traffic to India tenfold, aiming for 700 vessels annually. To support this growth, five ports—Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore, Chennai, and Kochi —will be developed as key cruise hubs.
